The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua is preparing to assemble a competitive roster for the 2025 Shop N Save Super Rugby competition. Forwards coach Chris Gibbes has revealed that the team has pinpointed two key positions—No.6 and No.8—that they aim to strengthen next season.
Gibbes has indicated that rather than repositioning player Te Ahiwaru Cirikidaveta, known as ‘Big T’, the team will explore other options to fill these crucial roles. “We probably won’t look at that, but we have to be agile in this competition,” he stated, highlighting the importance of flexibility in their game plan.
The return of robust flanker Joseva Tamani, following his brief tenure with the French club Colomiers, is a welcome boost. The 27-year-old, who has previously made 13 appearances for the Drua in the 2022 season, is recognized for his speed and agility, often seizing loose balls during matches and making swift runs towards the tryline.
Moreover, young talent Isoa Tuwai is also expected to impact the team’s performance in these positions. Tuwai, who plays for Suva Rugby and has garnered attention within the rugby community, has shown his versatility by shifting roles from inside centre to flanker throughout his journey.
Coach Gibbes is optimistic about the new additions, stating, “We’ve recruited Tamani back in, and young Tuwai has come through the academy, and they are pretty good players. The good thing about players is that they can play multiple positions.” This adaptability will be crucial for the team as they look to solidify their lineup.
The Drua aims to build on their recent success, having reached the Shop N Save Super Rugby quarterfinals for two consecutive years. They are set to announce a strong squad for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, scheduled for January 16-18 next year.
Several hopeful young players are vying for a chance to represent the Drua in the Sevens, including Isikeli Rabitu, Philip Baselala, Aisea Nawai, Simeli Tuiteci, Maika Tuitubou, Breyton Legge, Isikeli Basiyalo, and Jack Volavola, among others. They will compete against notable teams such as the Seattle Barbarians, Mike Friday’s Select 7s, Samoa, Australian Select, All Blacks 7s, and Fiji 7s.
As the team takes a break to spend time with their families during the holiday season, they will prepare to resume training and work diligently toward a successful season in 2025.
This article emphasizes the Drua’s commitment to strengthening their squad while fostering young talent, showcasing their dedication to growth and competitiveness in rugby.
