The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua is gearing up to assemble a formidable squad for the 2025 Shop N Save Super Rugby competition. Forwards coach Chris Gibbes has highlighted the need to strengthen two specific positions: No.6 and No.8.

Gibbes clarified that they are not considering moving Te Ahiwaru Cirikidaveta, known as ‘Big T’, into these positions, indicating that they have other strategies in mind to fill those roles. “We probably won’t look at that, but we have to be agile in this competition,” he stated.

The team is excited to welcome back flanker Joseva Tamani after a brief stint with French club Colomiers. At 27 years old, Tamani is seen as a key addition to the roster, expected to contribute significantly in one of the targeted positions. Having appeared 13 times for the Fijian Drua during the 2022 season, he is recognized for his agility and speed, adept at capitalizing on loose balls and making impactful runs toward the tryline.

Additionally, Gibbes noted that young talent Isoa Tuwai could also enhance the team’s options in these positions. Tuwai, who plays for Suva Rugby, has captured the interest of rugby fans as he transitioned from inside centre to flanker over the years, showcasing his versatility on the field.

“We’ve recruited Tamani back in and young Tuwai has come through the academy, and they are pretty good players,” Gibbes remarked. He emphasized the advantage of having players capable of performing well in multiple roles, allowing them to adapt dynamically as needed.

With a strong showing in the Shop N Save Super Rugby quarterfinals for two consecutive years, the Drua is committed to continuous improvement. The team is set to announce a competitive lineup for the upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens, scheduled for January 16-18 next year at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka.

Aspiring Drua players, including Isikeli Rabitu, Philip Baselala, Aisea Nawai, Simeli Tuiteci, Maika Tuitubou, Breyton Legge, Isikeli Basiyalo, and Jack Volavola, are eagerly hoping to secure spots on the team.

Currently, the Drua players are enjoying a break to spend time with their families and friends, before returning to training in the New Year, where they will prepare for an exciting season ahead.

This is a promising time for the Fijian Drua, as they work to reinforce their squad and continue their pursuit of success in the competitive rugby landscape.
