The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua players are experiencing a unique pre-season camp on Kadavu, which holds personal significance for many of them. The team has set up their training base at Namalata Central School, where players are reconnecting with their heritage and the local community.
Kemu Valetini, who visited his ancestral village in Galoa for the first time, expressed his joy about the experience. He remarked, “Bringing all the boys here, training somewhere different, reconnecting with the people, the land, and the hospitality has been unreal.” His visit is particularly meaningful, as it allows him to honor the memories of his father, who left the village at a young age.
Breyton Legge, hailing from Lawaki Village, echoed similar sentiments, stating that being home for the first time was humbling. He described the breathtaking scenery of mountains and sea and conveyed how it enriched his experience.
Philip Baselala from Solotavui Village shared his excitement about showcasing the beauty of the South to his teammates, further strengthening their team bonding during this unique summer camp.
Simione Kuruvoli highlighted the positive impact they are making on local children who are attending their training sessions. “It’s good to connect with our families, back to our roots, our villages…especially to the young kids watching us,” he noted.
Etonia Waqa, who has not returned to Kadavu in nearly a decade, is grateful for the opportunity to visit his homeland alongside Vuate Karawalevu from Dravuawalu, Naceva. Both players expressed their appreciation to Drua management for choosing to host the pre-season in their homeland.
This return to their roots not only strengthens the bond among the players but also fosters a connection with the community, creating lasting memories for both athletes and locals alike. Such experiences contribute to the players’ growth, both on and off the field, setting a positive tone for the upcoming season.
In summary, the Drua players’ pre-season camp is an enriching experience, allowing them to forge connections with their heritage and the community while preparing for the season ahead. This journey underscores the importance of culture and personal history in sports, demonstrating how returning to one’s roots can provide motivation and unity.
