The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua is gearing up to assemble a formidable squad for the upcoming 2025 Shop N Save Super Rugby competition. Forwards coach Chris Gibbes has indicated that the team is focusing on enhancing two key positions, specifically No. 6 and No. 8, to strengthen their performance.

Gibbes emphasized that the objective is not to shift Te Ahiwaru Cirikidaveta, affectionately known as ‘Big T’, into these roles. Instead, he has other players in mind for these critical positions. He stated, “We probably won’t look at that, but we have to be agile in this competition.”

Excitingly, the team is reintegrating robust flanker Joseva Tamani, who recently returned from a stint at French club Colomiers. The 27-year-old made 13 appearances for the Drua in the 2022 season and is noted for his speed and agility, making him a valuable asset as the team aims for success in the upcoming season.

Young talent Isoa Tuwai, who is currently playing for Suva Rugby in the Skipper Competition, has also garnered attention. Tuwai’s remarkable progression from inside centre to flanker has impressed many, and Gibbes sees great potential in both Tamani and Tuwai, stating, “We’ve recruited Tamani back in and young Tuwai has come through the academy and they are pretty good players.”

With their recent track record of reaching the Shop N Save Super Rugby quarterfinals for two consecutive years, the Drua are determined to build upon their success. Plans are already underway for the new season, with the team expected to announce a strong squad for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens in Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, slated for January 16-18 next year.

A roster of eager young hopefuls is also in the wings, including Isikeli Rabitu, Philip Baselala, Aisea Nawai, Simeli Tuiteci, Maika Tuitubou, Breyton Legge, Isikeli Basiyalo, and Jack Volavola, all hoping to make their mark.

Currently, the Drua are taking a well-deserved break, spending quality time with family and friends, and will return to training after the New Year. This promising buildup indicates that the team is determined and optimistic about the challenges ahead.

In summary, the Fijian Drua is focusing on strategic recruitment and player development as they prepare for their future competitions. With the integration of experienced players and rising stars, the team is poised to enhance their performance and continue striving for excellence in the rugby arena.
