The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua is gearing up for the 2025 Shop N Save Super Rugby season and aims to assemble a formidable squad. Forwards coach Chris Gibbes has identified the critical need for reinforcements in the No.6 and No.8 positions.
Gibbes has indicated that he does not plan to reposition Te Ahiwaru Cirikidaveta, known as ‘Big T’, but has alternative candidates in mind for these crucial roles to ensure competitiveness. “We probably won’t look at that, but we have to be agile in this competition,” Gibbes stated.
Excitingly, robust flanker Joseva Tamani is returning to the Drua after a brief stint with the French club Colomiers. The 27-year-old, who previously made 13 appearances for the Drua in the 2022 season, is recognized for his speed and agility, making him a valuable addition as he is expected to occupy one of the two target positions.
In addition, young talent Isoa Tuwai, who has made a name for himself while playing for Suva Rugby in the Skipper Competition, is also in consideration for these positions. Tuwai, who has transitioned from inside center to flanker, has been gaining attention for his capabilities on the field.
Gibbes expressed confidence in the potential of both Tamani and Tuwai: “We’ve recruited Tamani back in and young Tuwai has come through the academy and they are pretty good players.” The ability of players to adapt to multiple positions is seen as a significant asset for the team.
The Drua has reached the Shop N Save Super Rugby quarterfinals for two consecutive years and is determined to improve further. The team is also set to field a strong lineup for the upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens tournament, scheduled for January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.
Several budding rugby stars are eager to make their mark in the Drua 7s team, including Isikeli Rabitu, Philip Baselala, Aisea Nawai, Simeli Tuiteci, Maika Tuitubou, Breyton Legge, Isikeli Basiyalo, and Jack Volavola. The Drua will face tough competition from teams such as Seattle Barbarians and the All Blacks 7s.
Currently, the team is taking a well-deserved break, cherishing time with family and friends, before returning to training in the New Year. This positive step reflects their commitment to not only the upcoming challenges but also their growth and improvement as a team.
In summary, the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua is looking to fortify its squad ahead of the new season, focusing on critical positional enhancements while nurturing emerging talent. With their recent successes in mind, fans can remain optimistic about the team’s potential in the upcoming competitions.
