The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua is gearing up to assemble a competitive squad for the upcoming 2025 Shop N Save Super Rugby competition. Forwards coach Chris Gibbes disclosed that the team has pinpointed two key positions that require reinforcement: No.6 and No.8. Instead of reshuffling current player Te Ahiwaru Cirikidaveta, nicknamed ‘Big T’, into either position, Gibbes indicated that they have alternative strategies in mind.

The team is excited about the return of dynamic flanker Joseva Tamani, who is back after a stint with French club Colomiers. At just 27 years old, Tamani is regarded as a valuable asset, known for his agility and capability of capitalizing on loose balls during play, making him a strong candidate for one of the needed positions.

Additionally, young talent Isoa Tuwai, who has made waves playing for Suva Rugby in local competitions, is expected to contribute positively to the forward lineup. Transitioning from inside centre to flanker over the years, Tuwai’s diverse skill set has attracted attention from rugby fans and scouts alike.

Gibbes emphasized the importance of player versatility, noting that both Tamani and Tuwai are capable of filling the required roles effectively. The Drua team remains focused on building upon their previous successes, having reached the Shop N Save Super Rugby quarterfinals for two consecutive years.

The squad will also prepare for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens tournament at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka from January 16-18 next year. Promising young players eager to secure a spot for the Drua 7s include Isikeli Rabitu, Philip Baselala, Aisea Nawai, Simeli Tuiteci, Maika Tuitubou, Breyton Legge, Isikeli Basiyalo, and Jack Volavola, among others.

As the team takes a well-deserved break to spend time with family and friends, they will return to rigorous training in the New Year, poised for a strong campaign ahead.

This proactive approach towards team development and the dedication of both seasoned and young players provides an optimistic outlook for the Drua’s future successes in upcoming competitions, fostering a spirit of growth and enthusiasm within the team and its supporters.
