The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua is preparing to assemble a robust squad for the 2025 Shop N Save Super Rugby competition. Forwards coach Chris Gibbes has indicated that the team has pinpointed two positions, specifically No.6 and No.8, that require enhancement ahead of the new season.
Gibbes clarified that there are no plans to reposition Te Ahiwaru Cirikidaveta, also known as ‘Big T,’ into either role, stating that alternative strategies are being explored for these positions. He remarked, “We probably won’t look at that, but we have to be agile in this competition.”
The Drua will benefit from the return of dynamic flanker Joseva Tamani, who recently completed a stint with the French club Colomiers. At 27 years old, Tamani is regarded as a significant addition to the team and is anticipated to step into one of the critical forward positions.
Tamani previously played 13 matches for the Fijian Drua during the 2022 season and is recognized for his speed and ability to capitalize on loose balls, making him a valuable asset as they aim to enhance their performance. Additionally, the young talent Isoa Tuwai, a product of the Drua development system, is expected to contribute substantially in these positions. Tuwai, who currently plays for Suva Rugby, has garnered attention for his skills and versatility.
Gibbes expressed confidence in the team’s depth, saying, “At the moment, the good thing about players is that they can play multiple positions.” He emphasized that the recruitment of Tamani, along with the development of Tuwai, aligns with the team’s strategy to strengthen their forward pack.
The Drua have consistently reached the Shop N Save Super Rugby quarterfinals for the past two years and are eager to continue their upward trajectory. They are set to field a competitive squad at the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens, scheduled for January 16-18 next year in Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka.
Emerging talents hoping to secure a place on the Drua 7s team include Isikeli Rabitu, Philip Baselala, Aisea Nawai, Simeli Tuiteci, Maika Tuitubou, Breyton Legge, Isikeli Basiyalo, and Jack Volavola.
The Drua are currently taking some time off to spend with family and friends, but they will return to training with renewed energy after the New Year, setting their sights on a successful season ahead.
This upcoming season is filled with promise for the Fijian Drua, who are not only focused on individual player development but also on harnessing team dynamics to create a competitive edge in their future matches. The fusion of experienced players and emerging talents presents an exciting opportunity for the team to build on their successes and strive for greater achievements in the Super Rugby competition.
