The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua is gearing up for the 2025 Shop N Save Super Rugby competition, with a focus on strengthening their squad. Forwards coach Chris Gibbes has highlighted the need to enhance their roster, specifically targeting the No.6 and No.8 positions. Rather than reshuffling existing players, Gibbes is keen on exploring other options.
The team is excited to welcome back flanker Joseva Tamani, who returns after playing with French club Colomiers. At 27, Tamani is viewed as a vital addition, particularly noted for his agility and pace on the field. He previously played 13 games for the Drua in the 2022 season and is expected to excel in the positions that the team is looking to fill.
Additionally, young talent Isoa Tuwai, who has made a name for himself in the Suva Rugby team, is also seen as a promising option for these roles. Tuwai’s journey from inside centre to flanker showcases his versatility and potential.
Gibbes expressed optimism, stating, “We’ve recruited Tamani back in and young Tuwai has come through the academy, and they are pretty good players.” His confidence in the players being able to cover multiple positions is encouraging for the team’s future.
Following two consecutive years of reaching the Shop N Save Super Rugby quarterfinals, the team is determined to push further in the upcoming season. They are also preparing for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens, scheduled for January 16-18, where they will compete against strong international teams.
A number of hopeful young athletes are eyeing a spot in the Drua 7s, including Isikeli Rabitu, Philip Baselala, and Aisea Nawai, among others.
As the team takes a short break to recharge with loved ones, they are expected to return to training with renewed energy in the New Year, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
This perspective on the Drua’s preparations not only underscores the team’s commitment to excellence but also highlights the importance of nurturing local talent in the sport. The combination of returning experienced players and promising newcomers makes for an exciting future for the Fijian Drua rugby team.
