Swire Shipping Fijian Drua head coach Glen Jackson has expressed his ambition for Meli Derenalagi to excel as the best blindside flanker in the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific competition. In a recent interview, Jackson stated that this goal prompted the decision to relieve Derenalagi of his captaincy. The coach emphasized that Derenalagi is fully supportive of the change, allowing him to concentrate solely on his performance on the field.

In a strategic move, Jackson has appointed hooker Tevita Ikanivere and veteran halfback Frank Lomani as the co-captains for the 2025 season. He praised their professionalism and experience, noting that their leadership will greatly benefit the team. “Both have been here for a long time; professionalism on and off the field makes them an excellent choice to lead us into the 2025 season,” he remarked. This marks a significant moment for the club as they embrace the concept of co-captains for the first time, a development that the coaching staff is enthusiastic about.

However, the squad announcement did bring surprises, including the omission of center Apisalome Vota, alongside Michael Naitokani and prop Jone Koroiduadua, who has signed with an American club in the Major League Rugby competition.

This development for the Drua team signals a new chapter, emphasizing a commitment to improvement and a focus on individual player strengths. As Derenalagi shifts gears to become a standout flanker, and with new leadership in place, fans can look forward to an invigorating 2025 season for the Fijian Drua.
