Swire Shipping Fijian Drua head coach Glen Jackson is aiming for Meli Derenalagi to become the top blindside flanker in the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific competition. Jackson explained in an interview that the decision to relieve Derenalagi of his captaincy was made to allow him to concentrate fully on his performance on the field.
“Meli is on board with us on this decision, so he can just focus on his rugby,” Jackson stated.
In a significant development for the team, Jackson announced that hooker Tevita Ikanivere and seasoned halfback Frank Lomani will share the role of co-captains for the upcoming 2025 season. “Both have been with us for a considerable time, exhibiting professionalism both on and off the field. This makes them excellent choices to lead us into the 2025 season,” remarked Jackson. He mentioned that the coaching staff is enthusiastic about this new approach of having co-captains, marking a fresh chapter for the club.
Notably, the Drua’s recently announced squad saw the unexpected omission of centre Apisalome Vota, alongside Michael Naitokani and prop Jone Koroiduadua, who will be pursuing an opportunity in the Major League Rugby competition in America.
This strategic shift in leadership and focus on player development indicates a proactive approach from the Fijian Drua coaching team. Such changes could foster team cohesion and elevate the performance level as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Overall, this leadership structure could help cultivate a supportive environment where players feel empowered to shine individually while working collaboratively towards collective success.
