Mick Byrne, the head coach of Fijian Drua, has expressed his full support for Glen Jackson, the team’s current coach, in light of continuing concerns over inconsistent officiating in Super Rugby. Byrne, who has been instrumental in the Drua’s foundational growth, pointed out that while the team excels in areas such as the scrum and set-piece play, they often find their efforts diminished due to officiating decisions.

Byrne emphasized that referees seem reluctant to favor the Drua during pivotal moments of games. He noted that in past seasons, numerous tries scored by his team have been subject to TMO (Television Match Official) reviews, with several validated scores unfairly disallowed. He suggested that the distinct style of play characteristic of Fijian teams might create misunderstandings for referees who are not yet accustomed to their approach.

Despite these obstacles, Byrne remains optimistic and encourages patience as Fiji’s teams strive to showcase their talent at the premier level. He trusts Jackson’s insights into officiating dynamics, considering Jackson’s experience as a former referee and now a coach.

Looking ahead to their upcoming match against the Chiefs, the Drua are determined to capitalize on their strengths. The positivity surrounding the team, bolstered by a dedicated fan base, indicates a potential for turning performances into wins. Their goal is not only to address officiating challenges but also to cultivate a playing style that may earn them increased respect and recognition from referees moving forward.
