The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua is gearing up for the start of the 2026 Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific season next month, but a significant challenge looms ahead with the departure of former captain Tevita Ikanivere. His absence is expected to be felt deeply, particularly in the front row, where hooker Mesulame Dolokoto acknowledges that adjustments will be necessary following Ikanivere’s exit.
Dolokoto expressed the weight of the responsibility on the remaining players, saying, “Yes, and with Tex away in Japan, massive shoes to fill. He’s a quality player, a high caliber player. He gives us hookers who are still here massive shoes to fill.” Ikanivere, who had a remarkable five-year tenure with the Drua, has signed with Japanese club Mie Honda Heat after the conclusion of the 2025 season, leaving behind a leadership void and a wealth of experience.
Over his stint with the Drua, Ikanivere made 50 appearances and scored 12 tries, while also representing the Flying Fijians internationally, earning 32 caps and crossing the line another 12 times. His departure will undoubtedly challenge the Drua as they prepare for their season opener against Moana Pasifika at Churchill Park in Lautoka on February 14.
As the Drua look to fill the gap left by Ikanivere, the team remains optimistic about harnessing the passion and talent of their remaining squad members to maintain their competitive edge in the upcoming season. This transition period may also present an opportunity for emerging players to rise and showcase their abilities on a bigger stage.
