The Fijian Drua Blues emerged triumphant in the Sun Bell Tuna 10s tournament, securing a victory over the Fijian Drua Green with a score of 14-5 in a thrilling main cup final held at Prince Charles Park yesterday.
From the outset, the Drua Blues demonstrated their strength, quickly building a 14-0 lead by halftime. Their unbeatable defense combined with effective execution of their game plan put the Drua Green in a challenging position. Although the Drua Greens managed to score a try in the second half, it fell short of bridging the gap, leading to a 14-5 final result that crowned the Blues as champions.
In the semi-finals leading to the final, the Drua Blues narrowly defeated Malolo with a score of 7-0, while the Drua Green triumphed over Nadroga in a closely fought contest, finishing at 12-7.
Captain Vilive Miramira of the Drua Blues conveyed a sense of pride in his team’s achievement, stating, “It was a good session for us, especially returning from the Northern tour. We just worked on our defense, which was our main strength, and stuck to our game plan.”
For the Nadroga team, the tournament served a greater purpose beyond competition. Team manager Salamisa Batimala noted its significance in evaluating player readiness for the upcoming season. He remarked, “This was a good opportunity for us to see where we are in terms of fitness and identify areas to improve.”
This event not only highlights the competitive spirit of the Fijian rugby community but also reflects a shared commitment to development and teamwork among the players and teams involved. The Drua Blues’ victory is a testament to their hard work and determination, marking a promising start to the season.
Overall, the tournament is a hopeful sign for the future of Fijian rugby, as teams continue to build on their skills while fostering an environment of healthy competition.
