Drownings Rise in Fiji Spur Urgent Calls for Water Safety

Authorities are investigating the tragic drowning of a three-year-old boy in Nacokaika Village, Naitasiri. The child went missing while accompanying his mother and siblings to a nearby river for laundry. A search was initiated shortly after he disappeared, leading to the discovery of the boy’s body just a few meters from where he was last seen.

In another unfortunate incident, former national netball coach Unaisi Rokoura is missing after diving for freshwater mussels near the Navuso Agriculture School. Divers from the Police Mobile Force and the Fiji Navy have joined the search efforts, which resumed following a temporary suspension due to difficult conditions. A woman who was with Rokoura has tragically been confirmed dead, with her body recovered the previous day, and a post-mortem examination is scheduled.

These incidents reflect a series of recent drowning tragedies in Fiji that have raised concern over water safety, particularly in natural bodies. A similar case involved a man who drowned while diving for mussels in the Nakadi River, and several reports highlight the dangers of strong currents in local rivers. Community awareness and engagement are crucial during such distressing times, emphasizing the need for vigilance around water safety.

Local authorities are urging parents and guardians to be extra cautious and supervise children closely during water activities to prevent such heart-wrenching incidents. As investigations proceed, there is hope that these tragedies will lead to a greater emphasis on water safety measures, ultimately fostering a safer environment for families and children near waterways.
