Tomasi Tuivuna has emphasized the vital role of youth in the future of golf in Fiji. Participating in a Stableford tournament at the Vatuwaqa Golf Course in Suva, the 44-year-old Tuivuna joined over 65 golfers in the event sponsored by Golden Ocean. Tuivuna, who began his golfing journey at the age of 14, shared that his family’s deep connection to the sport influenced his passion—his father and brothers are all golfers.

Reflecting on the challenges of the Stableford format, especially with the use of plastic tees, Tuivuna stated, “It’s not easy. The format requires consistency. But I enjoy it, especially the chance to play with the members.” Recently, he celebrated a significant victory in Denarau, marking his first major win of the year, which he believes has bolstered his confidence for upcoming competitions.

Looking ahead, Tuivuna is excited about the upcoming Fiji Golf Open and is preparing for it, although the exact date has yet to be confirmed. He expressed admiration for the emerging talent among young golfers in Fiji, particularly from regions like Nadi and Lautoka. “They are the future of our clubs and our national team,” he said, urging the community to offer support and guidance to nurture these young athletes.

This perspective aligns with broader efforts within Fijian golf clubs to engage the youth. Notable figures like Shaun Hwang, vice-president of the Fiji Golf Club, have also underscored the significance of youth involvement in sports, inspired by icons such as Vijay Singh. Recent tournaments in Fiji have witnessed strong youth participation, highlighting a collective commitment to fostering a supportive environment for golfers of all ages.

As local golf clubs continue to focus on youth engagement, there is a promising outlook for the sport’s future in Fiji. The enthusiasm and camaraderie found within these events not only enhance competitive spirit but also strengthen community bonds, paving the way for a vibrant golfing culture that encourages the next generation.
