The Traffic Department of Fiji Police is calling on drivers to adhere to speed limits after a woman in her 70s lost her life in an accident on the Viseisei bypass road yesterday. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana reported that the victim was a passenger in a vehicle operated by a 36-year-old woman, who is now considered a suspect in the case.
According to preliminary investigations, the suspect is believed to have lost control of her vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and collide with a post. The force of the impact then caused the vehicle to swing back onto the road, where it struck another vehicle.
The suspect was taken to Lautoka Hospital for treatment, while the driver of the second vehicle and their passenger were unharmed. SSP Divuana emphasized that speeding appears to be the contributing factor in the accident and reiterated the importance of driving within speed limits to ensure the safety of all road users.
Currently, the road death toll stands at 37, a significant decrease compared to 60 during the same period last year.
