The Ministry of Transport has been deliberating the implementation of drug tests for drivers, as a significant portion of road accidents can be attributed to driving under the influence of alcohol. Assistant Minister Naisa Tuinaceva highlighted that various relevant agencies, including the Police and the Land Transport Authority (LTA), are collaborating to integrate this important measure into policy.

Tuinaceva mentioned that the process requires several steps to be finalized before the law can take effect. He emphasized the need for a well-structured approach and thorough consultations to ensure the effective implementation of this policy. He stated, “Certainly, when the law is put into place, consultations need to be carried out with members of the public. Awareness and education will follow, and this must be done properly.”

While acknowledging the challenges associated with conducting drug tests, Tuinaceva affirmed the government’s serious consideration of introducing such measures on the roads. The Minister for Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, confirmed that there will be a focused effort by the LTA and other stakeholders, particularly as the Christmas period approaches, to enhance compliance with existing checks and regulations.

Tuisawau also pointed out that alcohol testing is already part of the legal framework, while the establishment of drug testing protocols is still a work in progress. This initiative represents a proactive step towards promoting road safety and reducing accidents caused by impaired driving, ultimately leading to safer roads for everyone. It is hopeful that with proper consultation and education, the community will support these necessary changes.
