Driver Charged with Dangerous Driving Resulting in Child’s Death Released on Bail

Ashneel Sahil Deo, the driver accused of causing a fatal accident involving a five-year-old boy on the Lekutu-Nabouwalu Highway in Bua, was granted bail under strict conditions at the Labasa Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The incident, which occurred on June 15, 2024, supposedly saw Deo leaving the scene without stopping after the occurrence of the accident.

Deo, charged with dangerous driving resulting in a death and failure to adhere with post-accident protocols, appeared before Magistrate Bimsara Jagodage. After the accident, he evaded police pursuit for five days, ending in his arrest on June 19.

During the initial police inquiry, Deo allegedly chose to remain silent, prompting the formulation of strict bail terms. Although police prosecutor Sergeant Vignesh Prasad did not oppose bail, he demanded that two sureties be arranged by the defense. These stipulations were upheld by Deo’s attorney, John Prasad, who also accepted a cash bail bond set at $1000.

Sahil Deo, the defendant, was granted conditional bail, which included the directive to avoid re-offending, refrain from changing his residency, and to not interfere with State witnesses. He has been mandated to report on all pending case dates until it is resolved. Additionally, his ability to apply for any travel documents during the course of the active case has been restricted.

The case is due to resume on August 29, 2024, at the Nabouwalu Magistrate’s Court. However, Deo’s attorney has sought a change in venue to Labasa Magistrates Court, a request which requires formal application according to Magistrate Jagodage.
