Driver Charged in Hit-and-Run Death of Five-Year-Old Boy Released on Bail

The driver responsible for the tragic accident on Lekutu-Nabouwalu Highway in Bua, which resulted in the death of a five-year-old boy, was released on strict bail conditions yesterday from the Labasa Magistrate’s Court. The alleged offender, Ashneel Sahil Deo, stood before Magistrate Bimsara Jagodage, accused of driving dangerously which allegedly led to the child’s death.

According to the charges, Deo did not stop after the accident and failed to conform with requirements following the incident. The accident took place on June 15, 2024, when the deceased child was purportedly trying to cross the road with his father. The child succumbed to his injuries a day later at the Labasa Hospital. Deo was at large for five days after the incident, before being arrested on June 19.

During his initial police interview, Deo reportedly chose not to speak. Sergeant Vignesh Prasad, the police prosecutor, did not oppose bail but requested the defense to provide two sureties. Deo’s lawyer, John Prasad, initially asked for only one surety but later concurred with the request for two. A bail bond of $1000 was also issued.

Magistrate Jagodage set the bail terms, which include not committing further offenses, residing with his father in Naduna (Labasa), and not changing his address. Deo was also instructed not to disrupt State witnesses and to make an appearance on all set dates until the case is resolved. The court also ordered him not to apply for any travel documents while his case is ongoing.

The next case hearing is scheduled for August 29, 2024, at the Nabouwalu Magistrate’s Court. Deo’s attorney made a request to transfer the findings to the Labasa Magistrates Court, which the Magistrate advised would require an application for the case to be moved.
