Dreketi Central College has achieved a remarkable milestone by qualifying for the semi-finals of the Weet-Bix Raluve Under-16 rugby competition for the first time in their history. The team secured this achievement with a hard-fought 14-12 victory against St Vincent College in the quarter-finals held over the weekend.
Team manager Isoa Bogitini praised the thrilling match, highlighting the unexpected challenges presented by St Vincent, whom they initially underestimated. “The game was a breathtaking quarter-final, and we were surprised at how tough our opponents were,” said Bogitini. This emphasizes the unpredictable nature of sports, where every team, regardless of reputation, can deliver fierce competition.
Before the match, the girls received a motivational message centered on pride and honor, which resonated deeply with the diverse backgrounds of the team members. Bogitini noted, “Despite their personal challenges, coming together as a family and playing for each other is a fantastic experience.” This reinforces the idea that sports can unite individuals, fostering resilience and camaraderie among players.
As Dreketi prepares for the semi-finals scheduled for August 16 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, Bogitini expressed the importance of addressing their weaknesses to enhance performance. He also acknowledged the critical role of fan support, urging the community to rally for the team once again in their pursuit of further history on the rugby field.
In addition to Dreketi, other teams such as Adi Cakobau School, Sigatoka Methodist College, and Ratu Latianara College have also secured their spots in the semi-finals, showcasing the competitive spirit of the tournament. Adi Cakobau edged out St. Theresa of Lusicux 12-7, Sigatoka Methodist defeated Lomaivuna High School 43-12, and Ratu Latianara College triumphed over Navatu Secondary Schools 31-5.
