Dredging to the Rescue: How an Australian Firm Plans to Combat Ba’s Flooding Crisis

Australian company Hall Contracting Ltd has been selected to undertake the dredging project for the Ba River. This announcement was made by Maciu Nalumisa, the Minister for Housing and Local Government.

Mr. Nalumisa expressed his satisfaction, stating, “I am pleased to share that the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways has engaged Hall Contracting Ltd for a critical dredging project at the Ba River.” He indicated that work would commence shortly and highlighted the ongoing issue of frequent flooding that has hindered growth in Ba.

Flooding has remained a significant concern in Ba Town, impacting both businesses and agriculture. Mr. Nalumisa pointed out that these recurring floods have not only disrupted communities but have also impeded economic development and opportunities. He explained that the floods are primarily caused by a considerable accumulation of silt in the Ba River, which has diminished its capacity for water discharge to nearly 50% of its original capability.

The dredging project will cover a 3.6-kilometer stretch from the mouth of the Ba River to the open sea, with plans to remove 300,000 cubic meters of silt. Mr. Nalumisa emphasized that this initiative would greatly enhance the river’s ability to manage excess water, ultimately protecting Ba Town and nearby areas from future flooding. Additionally, it is expected to support uninterrupted development in the region, including Govind Park.
