Maintenance dredging at Denarau Marina channel has become necessary, according to Cynthia Rasch, the chief executive officer of Port Denarau Marina. She expressed gratitude for the government’s allocation of funds, which was confirmed by Minister of Finance Biman Prasad during the last parliamentary session. The $5.5 million designated for dredging aims to address flooding and enhance infrastructure in Denarau, a significant contributor to the tourism economy.

Rasch noted that the last dredging of the Denarau Marina channel took place in 2012, and discussions regarding the need for further work have been ongoing with the Ministry of Tourism and Waterways. She emphasized that the Port Denarau Marina fully supports the project as it is crucial for maintaining safety and accessibility for vessels, thus underpinning Fijian tourism.

Currently, the marina is awaiting final approval for its dredging license, which is being processed by the Solicitor General’s office. Rasch stated that once the license is granted, the marina will share its plans with the public.

Additionally, the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, mentioned that plans for the dredging project are still under review. He highlighted that the technical team is conducting studies to determine the most effective approach. Despite the ongoing assessment, he expressed appreciation that funds have been secured for the necessary work, which is interconnected with supporting the tourism sector.

Ditoka noted that dredging will facilitate access for certain classes of vessels to their designated berths, which had previously been a challenge. He acknowledged the long-standing issues with flooding in the Nadi region, particularly affecting areas like Yavusania Village, which has suffered from soil erosion.

He reassured that the dredging is part of a broader strategy to address flooding concerns and that the necessary studies are being conducted to avoid any detrimental impact on the environment, such as saltwater intrusion into freshwater systems. The emphasis remains on careful management to maximize benefits while minimizing potential problems.
