In an impressive display of resilience, Suva FC made a remarkable comeback in the Digicel Super Women’s League, managing to recover from a 3-0 deficit at halftime to secure a thrilling 3-3 draw against Tailevu Naitasiri at the Fiji FA grounds in Vatuwaqa.
Tailevu Naitasiri started the match with a commanding performance. Goals from Timaima Ana, Ana Naivukivuki, and Katarina Nailele in the first half put them firmly in control. However, the second half saw a revitalized Suva team fight back. Penelope Pickering and Alisi Qereqeretabua were instrumental in leveling the score, demonstrating the team’s determination and tenacity.
Despite the draw, Tailevu Naitasiri’s head coach, Elvis Goundar, voiced disappointment over some referee decisions during the match. While he acknowledged his team’s effort, he pointed out the need for improvement in their defensive strategies. “The girls have played well, but it was not luck for us. The game was good; we were leading 3-0 at halftime, but unfortunately, it ended in a draw. Our defense was lacking in this match; that’s what we need to work on in our next match,” Goundar stated.
He also took a moment to commend Suva FC for being a formidable opponent and expressed gratitude towards the players and parents for their unwavering support, particularly given that it was exam week. “I would like to thank the parents for allowing their girls to come out and play. The girls deserve praise for showing up, especially during this busy time,” he added.
This match highlighted the competitive spirit and passion of the teams involved, as well as the importance of community support in youth sports. The dedication shown by the players and their families, even amid academic pressures, speaks volumes about their commitment to the game. This speaks well for the future of women’s football in Fiji, with players showing the potential for both athletic prowess and strong character.
