Drainage Solutions on the Horizon for Fiji’s Rice Farmers

The Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Vatimi Rayalu, has promised rice farmers in Dreketi, Macuata, that all drainage issues will be effectively addressed. He announced the appointment of a drainage board specifically to tackle these concerns.

Mr. Rayalu urged farmers in Vanua Levu to leverage this opportunity by visiting the drainage board office in Labasa for assistance.

Seventy-five-year-old farmer Ram Khewal expressed gratitude towards the Government for the drainage improvements made in Laqere, Tabia, Labasa. He noted that over 50 percent of the drainage work has already been executed and welcomed the ministry’s efforts.

However, Khewal, who is also the president of the Laqere Tabia Farmers Cooperative, has called on the Government to construct a seawall at their location to safeguard rice farms from potential damage. He pointed out that heavy rainfall annually results in the loss of around 30 acres of rice fields, which poses a significant threat to local farmers and food security.

He voiced concerns that despite requesting a seawall for at least four years, no actions have been taken by the Government or the Ministry of Waterways. Khewal intends to apply for the rice planting subsidy but believes additional measures are needed to boost rice production.

He suggested that more forums and discussions be held, allowing farmers to connect with relevant authorities and the Government to voice their concerns and collaboratively propose solutions for drainage challenges.

Additionally, drainage improvement efforts are underway in Soasoa, Labasa, an area that frequently experiences flooding during heavy rains.
