Dr. Saia Ma’u Piukala, the World Health Organization (WHO) Western Pacific Regional Director, has paid tribute to the late Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, honoring him as a “true stalwart of public health” whose impact resonated beyond Fiji. In a message of condolence addressed to the Fiji Government and Dr. Tudravu’s family, Dr. Piukala emphasized the loss felt by the region due to Dr. Tudravu’s passing, recognizing him as a dedicated leader committed to the health and wellbeing of Pacific communities.
For over 15 years, Dr. Tudravu held significant leadership roles within the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, including serving as Permanent Secretary. He was known as a reliable and steady voice in the sphere of regional health. Dr. Piukala remarked on the “quiet strength, generosity of spirit, and unwavering commitment” that characterized Dr. Tudravu’s approach, particularly during national crises, health reforms, and rebuilding efforts.
Dr. Tudravu inspired health leaders across the Pacific to prioritize collaboration and innovation, ensuring that the people remained at the heart of healthcare. His contributions were pivotal in the successful organization of the 76th WHO Western Pacific Regional Committee Meeting held in Nadi earlier this year. Moreover, he was active on the global stage, having attended the WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine in Delhi.
Dr. Piukala noted the profound loss felt by many, expressing that they will miss Dr. Tudravu’s wisdom, humor, and deep love for Fiji. He conveyed hope that Dr. Tudravu’s lasting legacy would continue to inspire health leaders in the future, reinforcing a commitment to the ideals he championed throughout his career.
