The findings of the Tribunal regarding the suspension of Christopher Pryde, the former Director of Public Prosecutions in Fiji, will soon be available to the public. However, the report will be released only after President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu reviews it and consults with relevant parties. The release has been delayed due to some officials being on leave for the Christmas and New Year holidays. The report was submitted to the President on December 23, 2024.
Pryde has been suspended since April 13, 2023, on allegations of misbehavior linked to his association with former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. A tribunal, led by Justice Anare Tuilevuka and supported by Justices Chaitanya Lakshman and Samuela Qica, was established to examine the allegations.
In a recent communication with the President’s office, Pryde emphasized the constitutional provisions stating that if the tribunal recommends insufficient evidence for removal, his suspension should end, and he should be reinstated. He stressed the need for a prompt resolution, citing the financial difficulties caused by his prolonged absence from work.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka refrained from commenting on the matter, indicating it is not within his purview. The President’s office confirmed that the report will be made public as mandated by the constitution, once the appropriate reviews and consultations are concluded.
This situation highlights the complexities of judicial processes and the importance of timely resolutions in public investigations. It also underscores the balance of ensuring accountability within the judicial system while protecting the rights of individuals involved.
Interestingly, the matter serves as a reminder of the constitutional frameworks that govern such processes and the dedication to uphold the rule of law, even during challenging times. As the New Year approaches, there is hope that this situation will be resolved swiftly, allowing all parties to move forward constructively.
