The High Court in Suva has approved a judicial review regarding the suspension of the salary, allowances, and benefits of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Christopher Pryde. In a decision delivered recently, High Court Judge Justice Savenaca Banuve granted Pryde’s application, which allows the matter to advance to a full judicial review hearing.
This case relates to a decision made around July 25, 2025, when the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) advised the President of Fiji to suspend Mr. Pryde’s salary and benefits. The President acted on the JSC’s recommendation, citing a supposed breach of Mr. Pryde’s service agreement and a failure to comply with conditions outlined in a letter from January 7, 2025.
Following this, Mr. Pryde submitted an inter partes summons on October 22, 2025, requesting to challenge both the recommendation from the JSC and the President’s subsequent decision. In his ruling, Justice Banuve determined that the application met the necessary criteria for judicial review, which allows the court to scrutinize the actions taken to see if they adhered to legal and constitutional standards.
The parties involved in this action include the Judicial Services Commission as the first respondent and the President of the Republic of Fiji as the second. The forthcoming judicial review is set to examine the legality and procedural fairness surrounding the suspension of the DPP’s remuneration and benefits, potentially setting a significant precedent for similar cases in the future.
