Christopher Pryde, reinstated as Fiji’s Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), has confirmed his intention to resume duties starting January 20, following a ruling from a tribunal that cleared him of any misconduct allegations. In a formal communication with the President’s Office, Pryde expressed readiness to return after the tribunal’s findings were delivered to President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu on December 23, 2024.

The three-member tribunal, chaired by Justice Anare Tuilevuka and including Justices Chaitanya Lakshman and Samuela Qica, unanimously concluded that the allegations against Pryde lacked substantial evidence. Their report not only absolved him but also introduced significant jurisprudence regarding the term “misbehaviour,” which has not been clearly defined in Fiji’s Constitution. This legal clarity is expected to assist the Judicial Services Commission in its future evaluations of complaints against judicial officers.

As part of the reinstatement process, Pryde’s original employment agreement from September 4, 2019, will take effect immediately, and he will receive repayment for any unpaid salary and benefits accrued during his suspension, which began on April 13, 2023. To ensure a smooth transition back into his role, he is required to report to the Chairperson of the Judicial Services Commission to reclaim official items such as laptops and mobile devices.
