The tribunal hearing regarding allegations of misconduct against Christopher Pryde, the suspended Director of Public Prosecutions, resumes today at the Court of Appeal in Suva, Veiuto.
Key figures are set to testify, including Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh, Permanent Secretary for Finance Shiri Goundar, Acting Chief Justice Justice Salesi Temo, and the Secretary for the Judicial Services Commission. The tribunal is currently evaluating the claims against Pryde and will make recommendations to His Excellency the President regarding potential removal from the DPP position.
Notable points of contention in the proceedings include a meeting on February 28, 2023, in which Pryde was reportedly seen in conversation with Sayed-Khaiyum for over 45 minutes while the Criminal Investigation Department was investigating him—a file that was already with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions at the time. Additionally, concerns have been raised regarding Pryde receiving a US$1000 monthly superannuation payment since December 4, 2023, without necessary approvals from the appropriate judicial authorities.
The tribunal’s session today is presided over by Justices Anare Tuilevuka, Samuela Qica, and Chaitanya Lakshman, with proceedings expected to commence at noon.
This hearing underscores the importance of accountability in public office and the need for transparency in judicial processes. It is a reminder of the systems in place meant to uphold integrity within important government roles. As the tribunal continues its examination, it holds the potential to reinforce public trust in the judiciary and set precedents for future conduct in similar cases.
