Ketan Lal, an Opposition Member of Parliament, has expressed his concerns regarding the poor condition of the road adjacent to Savusavu Airport. Lal, a local resident, pointed out that this vital roadway has been downgraded from a tar-sealed surface to gravel by road authorities, which has led to an uptick in accidents and excessive dust impacting both motorists and neighboring residents.

He highlighted that this issue not only reflects a neglect of infrastructure but also raises questions about the priorities and financial management of the Coalition Government. “Savusavu is a vibrant tourism hub, drawing visitors from around the globe who come to experience its unique beauty and charm. The airport is one of only two airstrips that enable air travel to the island. The condition of the road leading to this gateway is not merely a local concern; it holds national significance,” he stated.

Lal emphasized that a well-maintained, safe road is critical for supporting the tourism industry, a key component of the economy that provides livelihoods for numerous Fijians. “The shift of this road to gravel has serious consequences. The rise in accidents is a significant danger to public safety, while dust from passing vehicles poses health risks and creates disturbances for local residents.”

He argued that this situation is not simply an inconvenience butrather a failure of the government to provide safe and reliable infrastructure, a fundamental obligation of any administration. Lal is calling for accountability from the Fiji Roads Authority regarding this decision and questioned whether they lack the necessary funds for proper road maintenance.

He criticized the allocation of funds by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for a lavish dinner, suggesting that those resources could have been better invested in resurfacing this vital road, yielding real benefits for the community instead of temporary luxury.

Lal further condemned the current state of infrastructure management, saying, “This situation is indicative of misplaced priorities and a lack of accountability. The government should serve the public by ensuring their safety and well-being. Neglecting crucial infrastructure like roads shows a disregard for these commitments.”

He urged the government to take immediate action by providing the required funds to the Fiji Roads Authority for the reconstruction of the road near Savusavu Airport. “Addressing this issue is not just about repairing a road; it is about restoring trust in our leadership and demonstrating a commitment to the welfare of all Fijians,” he concluded.
