Edward Nand appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court today as he faces a second murder charge, adding to his current situation where he awaits sentencing for a prior murder committed in 2023. Nand is accused of taking the life of Afroz Khan, a Nadi man, between November 27 and December 2 of last year. Reports indicate that Khan was allegedly attacked by Nand and two accomplices, who struck him multiple times with a spanner before drowning him in a river in Tailevu.

Khan was reportedly kidnapped last November and found dead shortly after in Tailevu. The case against Nand has raised several questions about the violent acts he is accused of, and Magistrate Yogesh Prasad has decided to move the case to the Suva High Court for further proceedings, scheduled for March 12.

In addition to the charge involving Khan, Nand is set to be sentenced this Friday for the murder of Narend Chand, a Fiji-born Canadian who visited Fiji in early 2023 under tragic circumstances. Chand was reportedly a victim of a catfish scam, lured by someone pretending to be a woman he had conversed with online. He unknowingly fell victim to a robbery that led to his tragic demise; his body was found floating in the Waimaro River soon after.

Nand’s legal troubles highlight pressing issues around online safety, particularly illustrating the potential dangers of social media interactions. Cases like these serve as stark reminders of the need for caution when engaging with individuals online. As the legal proceedings continue, there is hope that justice will be served for the victims and their families.

This ongoing legal saga underscores the larger societal need for vigilance in protecting oneself from deceptive online practices and the unfortunate ramifications they can lead to.
