Ketan Lal, the Shadow Minister for Justice, has voiced significant concerns regarding the proposed increase in university fees for the upcoming academic year, especially amid the rising cost of living affecting Fijian families. He emphasizes that while periodic fee reviews are customary, the current economic climate does not warrant such increases.

Lal highlights the financial difficulties that many ordinary Fijians are facing due to soaring prices and economic instability. He acknowledges the existence of the Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Scheme (TSLS), which aims to assist students; however, he points out that some may opt for private education because of stringent bond requirements set by the Government. For these students, an increase in university fees could present an overwhelming challenge.

Furthermore, Lal criticizes Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s declaration of 2025 as a “special year,” questioning the sincerity of such claims when families are struggling financially and students are burdened by rising educational costs. He urges for more than just words; he calls for concrete actions to alleviate the hardships faced by Fijians.

According to Lal, universities should exhibit empathy and stand in solidarity with students and their families by suspending any planned fee hikes. He also appeals for government intervention to ensure education remains accessible to everyone. He stresses that effective leadership involves practical solutions to improve lives rather than merely making hollow political statements. Lal concludes by asserting that students, as the nation’s future, deserve better support.

This statement reflects a broader concern for the welfare of students and families in Fiji. It is an encouragement for educational institutions and the government to collaborate and seek solutions that prioritize accessibility and affordability in education, fostering a future where all students can achieve their academic goals without undue financial stress.
