The Dominion Brothers Youth rugby team is making headway in preparation for the McDonald’s Coral Coast 7s tournament, which will take place from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. Manager Manasa Moto emphasized that this tournament is a vital opportunity for their young players to gain exposure and showcase their skills in a competitive environment.
As they enter the second week of training, Moto expressed confidence in the players’ readiness, noting they understand what is expected of them. However, the team continues to face challenges, including food and transport logistics, as well as limited sponsorship. In light of these difficulties, support from senior players currently abroad has proven critical. These players contribute funds to assist their junior counterparts, exemplifying a community-oriented approach that underscores the importance of mentorship.
The team’s aspirations are focused on advancing to the Cup final and defending their title. For many of the players, rugby represents a significant path for personal growth and a means of livelihood, particularly for those who have left school. “Rugby is an avenue that can help these players earn a living and support their families,” Moto highlighted, showcasing the sport’s profound impact on their lives.
In training, emphasis is placed on discipline, fitness, and mastering the evolving rules of sevens rugby. Moto noted, “We’re teaching them to maintain their fitness and improve their skills on the field.” The Dominion Brothers are prepared to compete in Pool A against teams such as Tuva Youth, Pacific Nomads, and Nauru Rugby.
