The Dominion Brothers Youth rugby team, under the guidance of manager Manasa Moto, is preparing for the highly anticipated McDonald’s Coral Coast 7s tournament, scheduled to take place from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. Moto highlighted the event as an essential platform for exposing their young players to competitive rugby and providing them with invaluable experience.
As the team enters its second week of training, Moto expressed optimism in the players’ readiness, indicating they understand what is expected of them. However, the team faces significant challenges, including transportation issues and a scarcity of sponsorship. Despite these obstacles, the resilience of the Dominion Brothers is evident, largely supported by senior players currently playing overseas who contribute funds to assist their younger teammates.
The team’s goal remains focused on advancing to the Cup final and defending their title. For many of the players, rugby offers a vital opportunity for personal growth and a potential livelihood, especially for those who have left school. “Rugby is an avenue that can help these players earn a living and support their families,” Moto emphasized, highlighting the sport’s role in their lives.
In training, there is a strong emphasis on discipline and understanding the evolving rules of sevens rugby. Moto noted the importance of maintaining fitness and honing skills on the field as they prepare to compete in Pool A against teams such as Tuva Youth, Pacific Nomads, and Nauru rugby.
Moto has urged families and local community members to come out and support the team during the tournament, reinforcing the community spirit that is essential in youth sports. The narrative surrounding the Dominion Brothers reflects the transformative power of sports in providing hope and opportunities for aspiring athletes. By fostering growth, resilience, and teamwork, the Dominion Brothers are laying a hopeful foundation for future rugby stars in Fiji, emphasizing the potential for young players to thrive both on and off the field.
