The Dominion Brothers Youth rugby team is in preparation for the upcoming McDonald’s Coral Coast 7s tournament, scheduled for January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. Team manager Manasa Moto emphasized the significance of this tournament as a vital opportunity for their young players to gain competitive exposure and showcase their skills.
Entering their second week of training, Moto expressed confidence in the team’s readiness, stating that the players are aware of the expectations placed on them. However, challenges remain, including logistical issues related to food and transportation, compounded by a lack of sponsorship. The team’s resilience is commendable, bolstered by financial support from senior players currently abroad who contribute funds to assist younger athletes.
The team’s ambitious target is to reach the Cup final and defend their title. For many players, rugby represents not just a sport, but a pathway to personal growth and potential income, especially for those who have left school. “Rugby is an avenue that can help these players earn a living and support their families,” Moto highlighted, emphasizing the sport’s profound impact on their lives.
Training sessions are focused on instilling discipline and understanding of the evolving rules of sevens rugby, with an emphasis on fitness and skill enhancement. The Dominion Brothers will compete in Pool A against teams including Tuva Youth, Pacific Nomads, and Nauru Rugby.
Moto has also called upon local families and community members to rally behind the team during this important event, reinforcing the spirit of unity that sports can foster. This tournament not only serves as a platform for the players to compete but also as a celebration of community spirit and teamwork.
The journey of the Dominion Brothers illustrates the transformative power of sports in shaping young lives, offering them hope and a brighter future in rugby and beyond. By nurturing growth, resilience, and community support, the team aims to lay a strong foundation for the next generation of rugby stars in Fiji, thus highlighting the positive impacts of youth sports on their development and opportunities in life.
