Domestic Crimes Against Children Persist, Police Urge Vigilance and Community Action

Domestic-related crimes against children continue to be a significant issue, with 69 cases recorded in the first quarter of 2025-26. This figure remains consistent with the same period from the prior year. According to police statistics, there was a slight uptick in assault causing actual bodily harm, increasing from 22 to 23 cases, while rape incidents saw a rise from 10 to 14 cases. Indecent assault figures held steady at 10 cases, whereas sexual assaults decreased from 12 to 8.

The police data highlights a range of offenses, including common assault, defilement of minors aged 13 to 16, abduction of minors, failure to provide necessities, unlawful wounding, manslaughter due to breach of duty, and attempted rape. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu noted that despite these grave offenses, there has been an overall decline in crimes against women, dropping by 10 percent, and a 34 percent reduction in offenses against children.

Nevertheless, Commissioner Tudravu warned that domestic-related crimes such as assault, indecent assault, and sexual offenses remain serious threats to children’s safety. He called for strengthened community awareness and proactive policing measures, emphasizing the importance of timely reporting to better protect children and mitigate domestic-related crimes.

This situation reflects ongoing concerns mirrored in previous reports indicating fluctuations in crime rates involving children, with various measures being taken to address these troubling trends. It is essential for communities to engage actively in creating a safer environment for children, reinforcing the notion that collaborative efforts are crucial in combatting domestic violence and protecting vulnerable populations.

Despite the challenges, there is hope that increased community involvement and education will lead to more effective prevention strategies, fostering a safer future for children and families.
