For many young swimmers, reaching the Age Group National Swimming Competition is an impressive milestone. Over the weekend, 24 members of the Dolphin Swimming Club achieved this goal at the event held at the National Aquatic Centre in Suva. The competition, spanning two days, featured elite swimmers from across Fiji, with eligibility strictly limited to those who had qualified by achieving certain time standards during preliminary competitions from February to April.
Head coach Paula Cokanasiga emphasized that while winning medals is always an ambition, the primary focus for the Dolphin swimmers was on personal growth and meeting their individual goals. “Some of our swimmers hit their goal times, and some even set new personal bests,” Cokanasiga remarked, noting that the experience proved beneficial for all participants, even those who faced challenges.
The Age Group Nationals not only showcased young talent but also served as a preparatory phase for national representatives in the Dolphin Club who will soon compete at the Pacific Mini Games. Cokanasiga expressed optimism that the insights gained from this competition would be instrumental in their preparations for international events.
The overall victors of the meet were Tritons Swimming Club, who secured 42 gold medals, followed closely by Barracuda Swim Club with 39 gold medals and Great White Sharks with 38. In the girls’ division, Orca Swim Club led with 37 gold medals.
As the long course season concludes, attention will now shift to the upcoming short course season, which will be held in smaller pools. Cokanasiga noted the importance of qualifying through additional events leading up to the short course nationals in Nadi, describing it as “all part of their journey.”
These competitions not only highlight athletic prowess but also foster community support and resilience among young athletes, indicating a bright future for swimming in Fiji as these swimmers continue to strive for excellence on both national and international stages.
