Swire Shipping Fijian Drua prop Mesake Doge has received a formal warning from the Super Rugby Pacific Foul Play Review Committee for foul play. This decision comes after Doge was found guilty of dangerous play during the team’s match against the Western Force, which ended in a 52-15 defeat for the Drua.
The incident took place in the final minute when Doge made heavy contact with Force captain Jeremy Williams while entering a ruck. Although the Citing Commissioner considered the tackle serious enough to meet the Red Card threshold, the Foul Play Review Committee ultimately determined that Doge’s actions were not deliberate and decided against issuing a red card.
Fortunately for Doge and the Drua, he has been cleared of further penalties and will be eligible to participate in their upcoming match against the Crusaders in Suva on April 5th.
This incident highlights the ongoing scrutiny regarding player safety within rugby, a trend that has intensified in recent seasons. Other players, such as Motikiai Murray of the Drua, have faced similar situations, with strict enforcement of safety protocols underpinning the sport’s commitment to protecting players.
While setbacks like these can be challenging for teams, they also provide an opportunity for players to learn and grow. Fans can look forward to seeing how Doge rebounds from this situation as the Drua prepare to face a strong opponent in the Crusaders. The team’s resilience and ability to adapt following such challenges can lead to a more unified and determined squad on the field.
