Boxer Saimoni Ratu arrived in Labasa with the determination to win the vacant Fiji lightweight title and advance his boxing career. In an interview with SUNsports, the powerful fighter from Serea in Naitasiri expressed that he would retire if he loses to Umbayd Haider in their title match scheduled for tomorrow at Labasa’s Subrail Park.

“I’m in a do-or-die situation,” Ratu stated. He shared his long-standing commitment to boxing, having started as an amateur at age 14 and representing Fiji by 16, noting that he could have competed earlier but was underage.

Ratu emphasized his love for the sport but indicated that a loss against Haider would lead him to retire, while a victory would keep him in the ring. He exuded confidence as he prepared for the fight.

Hailing from a boxing family, Ratu’s older brothers Joeli Naleca, Waisele Ratu, and Opeti Tagi have all held Fiji titles in various weight classes. He acknowledged the support of his father, Saula Naicori, who has trained him despite health issues.

Ratu expressed gratitude to South Pacific Boxing Promotions director Mohammed Shaheem and promoter Fred Chand for providing him with this opportunity and their support during his training regimen.

Haider recently defeated Krishnil Mudaliar in the eighth round to win the Fiji super featherweight title, while Ratu had previously made headlines by knocking out Mudaliar in the first round. Both fighters will weigh in at 61 kilos, and Ratu stated he had no concerns about making weight.

The official weigh-in is set to take place today at 2pm at Pacific Energy Service Station, located opposite Meenoos Labasa.
