As the vibrant festival of Diwali approaches, Mahesh Syndicate, one of Fiji’s longest-established firework retailers, is gearing up to illuminate the celebrations with an exciting array of products. In light of increasing economic pressures and regulatory challenges, the store has successfully secured over 50 different types of fireworks for this year’s festivities, including cakes, fountains, sparklers, and budget-friendly options.

Vinay Kumar, the General Manager of Mahesh Syndicate, shared that due to various restrictions, the range of fireworks available has changed, prompting the store to diversify its offerings within the permitted categories. “We strive to provide a wide range to cater for all budgets,” he noted, emphasizing the store’s commitment to safety while maintaining the festive spirit.

Kumar explained that importing fireworks has become more complex, particularly after the COVID pandemic, due to stricter international regulations on items classified as dangerous goods. This has unfortunately led to the banning of many popular fireworks from years past, such as woodpeckers and rockets. Nevertheless, Mahesh Syndicate aims to innovate and adapt, balancing traditional fireworks with safety considerations.

With Diwali just around the corner, Kumar has observed a slight slowdown in sales attributed to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis affecting consumer spending. “People need to prioritize their budgets, especially when it comes to Diwali celebrations,” he explained, noting that many consumers are focusing their spending on essentials like food and decorations before allocating funds for fireworks.

As the holiday draws near, he anticipates a busier shopping weekend as families finalize their preparations for the festival. Mahesh Syndicate’s commitment to quality and safety remains strong, as they continuously invest in better packaging and product selections. Kumar also expressed gratitude for the Fijian government’s decision to allow the sale of consumer fireworks during Diwali, a distinct contrast to the restrictions seen in countries like Australia.

In 2026, Mahesh Syndicate will proudly celebrate its 50th anniversary, with hopes of continuing its legacy of lighting up Diwali for generations to come, fostering joy and unity within the community.

As this joyous occasion unfolds, the Ministry of Trade has also ramped up safety inspections to ensure that fireworks are sold responsibly, aligning with regulations that aim to minimize risks associated with fireworks, thereby enhancing public safety throughout the festivities. The collaborative efforts of retailers and regulatory bodies underscore a shared goal for a festive season filled with excitement and safety.
