Diwali in Fiji: Lights, Unity, and a Shopper Alert

Bula Vinaka, shoppers! As Diwali approaches in Fiji, the Festival of Lights transcends its Hindu roots, becoming a vibrant celebration embraced by diverse communities across the islands. This cultural event brings together iTaukei, Indo-Fijians, Rotumans, Chinese, and Europeans, showcasing Fiji’s rich multicultural tapestry.

The scent of sweets wafts through the air as families prepare for the festivities. Even non-Hindu households partake in the celebrations, often ordering traditional Indian sweets like laddoos and barfi to share with loved ones. Firecrackers and sparklers light up the night sky, filling the atmosphere with joy and laughter. For Hindu families, Diwali is not just a time for fun but a deeply significant occasion marked by religious rituals such as Lakshmi Puja, invoking blessings for prosperity and happiness in the coming year.

In the weeks leading up to Diwali, homes throughout Fiji are adorned with lights, candles, and diya (clay lamps) that symbolize the triumph of light over darkness. Schools and workplaces celebrate with vibrant functions that encourage everyone to don colorful attire, share food, enjoy dances, and collectively appreciate the nations’ diversity. This togetherness is evident even in places of worship, where the themes of light, peace, and unity resonate during gatherings.

Diwali’s official recognition as a public holiday in Fiji exemplifies its importance in reinforcing national identity and multicultural harmony. However, coupled with the festive spirit, the Consumer Council of Fiji (CCF) urges shoppers to be judicious in their purchasing during this busy season. Past Diwali celebrations have seen a surge in complaints, particularly regarding unethical business practices, prompting the Council to remind consumers to shop smart and remain vigilant.

Common issues include delayed deliveries of sweets, poor product quality, and price gouging on essential items. Last year, the Council documented 163 complaints totaling over $15,000, highlighting concerns such as unlisted prices, mismatches between advertised and checkout prices, and the sale of expired or contaminated products. Consumers are advised to inspect sweets upon delivery or purchase, keep receipts, and verify vendors’ reliability through customer reviews.

This Diwali season also sees many purchasing decorative lights to enhance their celebrations. The Council stresses the importance of safety with these items, warning against low-quality goods. Consumers should ensure products are safe and labeled according to indoor and outdoor use, emphasizing the collective responsibility to uphold safety standards in this joyous time.

Amid these precautions, Fiji’s Diwali presents an opportunity for reflection, community engagement, and a renewed commitment to cultural traditions. It remains a vibrant celebration where all Fijians can gather in shared joy, reinforcing hopes for unity, prosperity, and a brighter future. Happy Diwali, shoppers! May your festivities be filled with lights, laughter, and love.
