Diwali in Fiji: Leaders Urge Unity and Shared Heritage

The National President of the Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam (TISI Sangam), Parveen Bala, is calling for a deeper reflection on the nation’s shared heritage and a recommitment to unity as Fiji approaches the celebration of Diwali. He describes the festival as a “universal beacon” that signifies the enduring victory of Light over Darkness, Good over Evil, and Knowledge over Ignorance.

Mr. Bala draws a poignant connection between Diwali’s symbolism and the history of the Indo-Fijian community, paying tribute to the Girmitiyas—the indentured laborers who made their way from India to Fiji. He remarked, “Our forefathers arrived in Fiji with hope and hardship, and their legacy lives on today through the pillars of Sangam – our educational institutions, our temples, and our extensive community services.”

In his message, he highlighted the importance of civic responsibility, urging citizens to honor the vision of their ancestors this Diwali by reinforcing their commitment to nation-building and creating a more inclusive and compassionate future. “As we light our diyas, we are not just illuminating our homes, but igniting the flame of unity and the resilience of the Fijian spirit,” he stated.

Mr. Bala encouraged all Fijians to use this festive occasion as a means to strengthen bonds with family, friends, and neighbors, showcasing the warmth and harmony that is characteristic of Fiji. His appeal resonates with recent sentiments expressed by opposition leaders, like Inia Seruiratu, who also emphasized Diwali’s role in fostering unity across Fiji’s diverse societal fabric. Seruiratu highlighted the festival’s core messages of light overcoming darkness and good prevailing over evil as vital frameworks for community living.

As the nation prepares to celebrate, both leaders’ messages provide a hopeful outlook promoting values of empathy, understanding, and collective effort, which are essential in nurturing a harmonious and thriving society. The call to celebrate safely, especially regarding the lighting of diyas and fireworks, further underscores a necessary focus on joy and responsibility during the festivities.

Diwali becomes not just a moment of celebration but a profound reminder of the strength found in diversity and unity, inspiring Fijians towards a collective vision for a brighter future rooted in love and togetherness.
