The National President of the Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam (TISI Sangam), Parveen Bala, is calling for a deeper reflection on the nation’s shared heritage and a recommitment to unity as Fiji approaches the celebration of Diwali. He describes the festival as a “universal beacon” that signifies the enduring victory of Light over Darkness, Good over Evil, and Knowledge over Ignorance.
Mr. Bala draws a poignant connection between Diwali’s symbolism and the history of the Indo-Fijian community, paying tribute to the Girmitiyas—the indentured laborers who made their way from India to Fiji. He remarked, “Our forefathers arrived in Fiji with hope and hardship, and their legacy lives on today through the pillars of Sangam – our educational institutions, our temples, and our extensive community services.”
