As we prepare to illuminate our homes with diyas this Diwali, we not only celebrate the Festival of Lights but also embrace the spirit of unity that characterizes our beautiful nation, said Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu.
In his message for the occasion, Seruiratu highlighted that this cherished festival, a significant event in the Hindu calendar, symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. He emphasized that these themes resonate profoundly within Fiji’s diverse and multicultural society.
He stated, “Our history of multiculturalism is long-standing, built on principles of respect, tolerance, and a collective vision of peace. Fijians from various backgrounds come together during Diwali, embodying values of compassion, kindness, and unity that have unified us across generations.”
Seruiratu encouraged everyone to draw inspiration from Diwali’s message by fostering values of light and goodness in their everyday interactions. “Let us extend a hand to our neighbors, support one another, and work towards creating a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive,” he urged.
He reminded the public that the essence of Diwali extends beyond festivities; it is a call to action that encourages a commitment to integrity, selflessness, and service towards others.
Inviting Fijians to carry forward the spirit of the festival, he remarked, “As we share sweets, decorate our homes, and gather with loved ones, let us keep in mind the importance of treating each other with respect and striving for a more equitable society while celebrating our rich diversity.”
This Diwali, Seruiratu called on everyone to renew their faith in a Fiji that values each individual, irrespective of their background, culture, or beliefs. “May the light of Diwali guide and inspire us, reminding us that together, we can overcome any challenge,” he added.
Amidst the celebrations, he also emphasized the importance of safety while lighting diyas and fireworks, ensuring that the joyous occasion unfolds without incident.
This message of unity and hope during Diwali serves as a reminder that even amid challenges, the spirit of togetherness and mutual respect can illuminate the path forward for all Fijians. It is an opportunity to not only celebrate diversity but also to strengthen the bonds that unite the community as a whole.
