More than 550 families across Fiji were the recipients of Diwali hampers over the weekend, part of Westpac Fiji’s annual community initiative in partnership with the Rotary Club of Fiji. This program not only supports local families in need but also celebrates the diverse culture of Fiji during this festive time.
Shane Smith, the chief executive officer of Westpac Fiji, expressed the bank’s enduring commitment to community support, stating, “At Westpac, we believe in the power of community and giving back.” He reaffirmed the partnership with Rotary Clubs across Fiji, which has successfully continued since 2020.
President of the Rotary Club of Suva Peninsula Sunset, Ravikash Chand, emphasized the importance of collaboration as a means of making Diwali a more joyful occasion for families that might otherwise go without. He noted, “Together, we are helping make Diwali a brighter occasion for those who may not have the means to celebrate fully.”
The distribution of the hampers was managed by the Rotary Club of Suva Peninsula Sunset, leveraging the broader Rotary network to reach families in cities such as Suva, Lautoka, Nadi, Labasa, and Savusavu. Volunteers from both Westpac and Rotary were actively involved in delivering these much-appreciated gifts, which included essential grocery items and sweets.
Avinash Chand, a recipient from Navula, described the hamper as a “godsend,” expressing immense gratitude on behalf of his family of five. He stated that the support was particularly valuable to his household, which struggles financially, making the Diwali hamper a significant blessing.
Since its inception, Westpac’s collaboration with Rotary has resulted in the distribution of over 2,250 hampers, with each hamper valued at approximately $60. This initiative not only helps ease the burdens faced by struggling families but also reinforces community bonds through shared efforts to foster kindness and generosity during the festival of lights.
The ongoing commitment shown by Westpac and the Rotary Club serves as a reminder of the meaningful difference such community collaborations can make, especially during significant cultural celebrations like Diwali. Their efforts epitomize the spirit of giving and unity, offering hope and celebration to those who need it most.
