The Mineral Resources Department has announced that fireworks that do not meet specifications or exceed import restrictions will be confiscated during container clearance. With Diwali approaching in two weeks, department officials, along with personnel from the Department of Trade, have begun conducting retail inspections.
Inspections will take place across various divisions and continue until November 3. While fireworks can be used at designated times throughout the year, the approved hours on an average day are from 5 PM to 10 PM, extending to midnight on Diwali.
The department emphasized that all imported fireworks must undergo a stringent vetting process. This requires importers to provide detailed information to the Mineral Resources Department (MRD). Inspections are especially crucial in the weeks leading up to the Diwali festival.
The statement specified the types of fireworks that are not permitted, including spherical or cylindrical shells, various types of firecrackers, aerial fireworks, and homemade devices like bamboo guns. It classified these products as powerful pyrotechnics under the UN Hazard Classification system, identifying them as class 1.3 and 1.4 explosives. Class 1.3 fireworks are reserved solely for public displays by certified operators, while certain class 1.4 fireworks are available for consumer purchase.
Authorities advised consumers to ensure their fireworks are approved, citing incidents of improper and illegal use by the public. This misuse has included throwing fireworks at people, property, and animals, which poses risks of injury, accidents, fires, and property damage. Approved fireworks, having undergone testing, are deemed safe when used responsibly.
The MRD is tasked with monitoring the type and quality of permissible fireworks, while the Department of Trade ensures proper labeling and compliance with language requirements. The list of approved fireworks for public purchase includes combination batteries, mines, fountains, sparklers, spinners, low-hazard fireworks, and novelty items.
