Many Hindus residing along Caubati Rd in Suva expressed their disappointment on the eve of Diwali due to the considerable amount of rubbish accumulating outside their homes. Deepak Satish Chandra voiced his frustration towards the Nasinu Town Council for failing to fulfill its commitment to clear the waste before the festival’s celebrations.

Chandra highlighted that the unsightly rubbish reflects poorly on families preparing for visitors during such an important celebration. He stressed the significance of cleanliness during Diwali, emphasizing that residents have made efforts to tidy their properties in preparations for the holiday. He stated, “It feels bad to celebrate Diwali like this,” emphasizing how cleanliness is integral to the festivities.

The frustrations escalated as Chandra pointed out the conflicting messages residents received from the Nasinu Town Council and Suva City Council regarding waste removal responsibilities. Despite promises of timely collection, no action had been taken. This predicament forced residents to resort to burning their rubbish, raising health and safety concerns for the community.

Chandra pleaded for the council to act promptly, requesting them to clear the area so that residents can celebrate the festival in a clean and tidy environment. He expressed hope that the necessary cleanup would take place soon.

As Diwali is a time for celebration and coming together, it is hoped that local authorities will promptly address the waste issue, allowing families to enjoy the festival in a clean and welcoming atmosphere.

This situation highlights the crucial connection between community support and local governance, particularly during significant cultural celebrations. By effectively addressing these concerns, local councils can contribute positively to the celebrations and foster a sense of community spirit.
