In a touching demonstration of community spirit, the Golden Age Home in Samabula, Suva, recently celebrated Diwali with its elderly residents, fostering joy and unity during this significant festival of lights. The celebration, held on a Friday, was organized by dedicated staff members and caregivers.

This event is part of the home’s ongoing enrichment programs, which aim to uplift residents’ spirits and foster connections during various cultural and festive occasions. The residents enjoyed a festive lunch featuring Diwali sweets, ensuring that the essence of the festival was felt within the home.

The festive mood was further enhanced by a live performance from the Fiji Corrections Services Band, whose music brought smiles and energy to the gathering. Cultural dancers from the Indian High Commission’s Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre also performed traditional Diwali dances, filling the space with vibrant colors and liveliness.

Veremo Muria, the Director of Social Protection, emphasized the significance of this event for the residents. “Our residents deserve to experience the joy and warmth of Diwali,” Mr. Veremo stated. He further mentioned that the celebration honors the rich cultural heritage of the community while creating cherished memories and strengthening bonds between residents and their caregivers.

Such events not only provide joy but also help the elderly feel connected and valued within their community. It’s a wonderful reminder of how cultural celebrations can brighten lives and foster understanding across generations.

This celebration sets a positive example of how communities can uplift their members, especially those in care, by honoring traditions and creating moments of joy.
