Diwali Dangers: Avoiding Scammers This Festive Season

Spread the love

The FCCC has issued a warning to the public to remain vigilant against fraudulent activities during the Diwali season, as scammers attempt to take advantage of the heightened online shopping activity.

The FCCC highlighted that misleading advertisements, which misused the Fiji Government logo to appear legitimate, spread across social media platforms. These advertisements prompted users to click on unverified links, potentially leading them to fraudulent websites designed to harvest personal information for malicious purposes.

FCCC CEO Joel Abraham explained that these online scams are cleverly crafted to target Fijians eager to enhance their skills. He noted, “As we have emphasized previously, scammers have become more sophisticated in their approach towards Fijians.”

“Official information regarding Government-sponsored programs is always disseminated through verified channels. While we strive to implement more effective anti-scam measures and legislation in the future, we urge everyone to exercise caution,” he added.

As the Diwali festivities continue, the FCCC has urged Fijians to remain highly alert for potential scams.

“Be careful about any unsolicited offers, discounts, or giveaways that ask for personal or financial information. Scammers may disguise their malicious intentions using Diwali-themed communications, so it is essential to verify the legitimacy of all offers before taking action.”
