Divyankar Kumar, a veteran of the national women’s hockey team, continues to be driven by a deep desire to make her parents proud, which has been a key motivation throughout her sporting career. Since her debut in 2017, she has showcased her talent, representing Natabua High School and making significant contributions to her country’s national team, notably during their historic participation in the 2023 World Cup and achieving gold at the Pacific Games.
Kumar’s outstanding performance on the field has earned her a nomination for the prestigious Fiji Sports Woman of the Year Award, aimed at recognizing her hard work and achievements. Reflecting on her journey, she expressed pride in her accomplishments and emphasized the importance of the support she receives from her family and loved ones. This is her second nomination for the award, having been recognized previously in 2022.
The upcoming 2024 Fiji Sports Awards is scheduled to take place at the Vodafone Arena in Suva, where Kumar will be among several esteemed athletes celebrated for their contributions to sports in Fiji.
Her story is reminiscent of other young female athletes such as Irene Mar, a para-taekwondo competitor, and Merewalesi Kolitapa, who has excelled in both amateur boxing and AFL, highlighting the increasing recognition and empowerment of women in sports across various disciplines in Fiji. This shared dedication among female athletes serves as an inspiring testament to resilience and ambition, encouraging future generations to pursue their dreams.
As these athletes continue to break barriers, they symbolize hope and motivation for aspiring sportswomen, proving that with determination and support, remarkable achievements can be realized, regardless of the challenges they face.
