Division in the Ranks: Two Opposition Blocs Revealed in Parliament

The Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, announced today that there are two distinct groups within the Opposition side of the House.

Ratu Naiqama stated, “One is led by the Leader of the Opposition, which comprises 16 members. This group is now officially referred to as the group of 16.” He identified Jone Usamate as their Whip and Ketan Lal as the Deputy Whip.

The second group consists of 9 members and is led by Ioane Naivalurua, with Viliame Naupoto serving as their Whip and Alipate Tuicolo as the Deputy Whip.

Ratu Naiqama clarified that all 26 members continue to be recognized as Opposition Members, operating within the framework of these two groups. He emphasized his responsibility as Speaker to uphold the rights and privileges of all members in Parliament and within the standing and select committees.

In line with the establishment of these two blocs, the Speaker’s office will conduct a review of the membership for the six standing committees and four select committees to ensure equitable representation, with further announcements expected later this week.
